How many boxes of candy do you actually need?

One number decides the shopping trip: how many children will ring the bell. Start there, not at the supermarket shelf.

The formula

  1. Count the street. Children per household ร— 3 is a reliable starting estimate.
  2. Decide pieces per child. One for a busy street, two if you are the house with the good stuff.
  3. Divide by 30. A standard box holds about 30 pieces.
  4. Add 50%. Running out at 7:45 pm is the one mistake neighbours remember.

Example 40 children ร— 2 pieces = 80 pieces รท 30 = 2.7 boxes โ†’ buy 4.

Expected childrenBoxesTypical costNote
301$12โ€“18One box, one piece per child, with a handful spare.
602$24โ€“34Two boxes of different types so the bowl does not look uniform.
903$36โ€“50Three boxes, and start with the cheaper one on top of the bowl.
1204$48โ€“66Four boxes, or three boxes plus a bag of filler for the last hour.

Costs are 2026 supermarket ranges for a 30-piece mixed box. Bulk bags cost less per piece but look thin in a bowl.

Four swaps worth making

Nut-free

Choose boxes labelled "may contain" only after checking with parents; better, pick a factory-sealed nut-free brand and keep it in its own bowl.

No chocolate

Hard sweets and lollipops survive warm evenings; chocolate goes soft in a porch bowl by 8 pm.

No food colouring

Fruit chews and plain biscuits are the safest default for a mixed group of young children.

Teal pumpkin

A teal pumpkin on the step signals non-food treats โ€” stickers, glow sticks, small toys. Put it out before 6 pm.

Build the bowl

Empty every box into one wide bowl and mix. A bowl of three visible types reads as generous; four identical boxes stacked on a step reads as a shopping trip. Keep a second, unopened box behind the door โ€” refilling is faster than rationing.

Put the bowl on a small table at waist height, not on the step: children can reach it, the door stays clear, and nobody knocks the whole thing over.

Frequently asked questions

How much candy do I need per trick-or-treater?

One to two pieces per child is standard. A 30-piece box covers about 30 children at one piece each; most households buy for 1.5 times their expected footfall.

How many trick-or-treaters should I expect?

Count the children on your street and multiply by three. Suburban streets with pavements see more; apartment buildings see fewer, but they arrive in clusters.

What if I run out?

Turn the porch light off. That is the universal signal that a house is finished for the night, and children read it instantly.
