Twelve DIY costumes, scored by time and materials
The right DIY costume is the one you can finish tonight. This table is ordered by effort, not by how good it looks on Pinterest.

| Costume | Time | Skill | Materials | You need to own | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sheet ghost | 25 min | Scissors | $0–20 | A sheet, dark leggings | Best value on the list; weakest in daylight. |
| Black cat | 15 min | None | $5–10 | All-black outfit, headband | Ears from felt or card; eyeliner whiskers. |
| Skeleton | 40 min | Steady hand | $8–15 | Black base, white paint | Paint the bones, not the face. Skip the full skull. |
| 90s grunge | 5 min | None | $0 | Flannel, ripped jeans, boots | The only zero-cost look that photographs well. |
| Mummy | 30 min | None | $6 | White base, bandage strips | Wrap loosely; tight wraps cut circulation. |
| Vampire | 20 min | Basic makeup | $10 | Black suit or dress, fangs | Buy the fangs; make everything else. |
| Scarecrow | 35 min | Basic sewing | $12 | Flannel, straw hat, burlap | Straw is messy indoors — use raffia. |
| Cowboy | 10 min | None | $0–25 | Denim, boots, hat | The hat is the costume. Everything else is clothes. |
| Alien | 25 min | Makeup | $8 | Black base, silver makeup | Silver on the lids and cheekbones only. |
| Wednesday Addams | 15 min | Braiding | $0 | Black dress, white collar | The collar must be crisp or the look fails. |
| Ghost bride | 45 min | Sewing | $20 | Old white dress, veil | Charity-shop dress plus a veil from a fabric offcut. |
| Pumpkin | 20 min | None | $10 | Orange top, black leggings | Orange top, black stripes, green headband. |
Three rules that apply to every build
- Buy the detail, make the bulk. A pair of fangs, a hat or a veil costs less than the fabric and does more for the look.
- Never paint your whole face. White or coloured paint cracks within an hour. Use shadow and powder instead.
- Test in the light you will be photographed in. Porch light is warm and low; a phone flash at 11 pm is neither.
When DIY is the wrong answer
If the build needs a sewing machine, a wig or a fitting, it is not a DIY costume — it is a project. At that point the cheaper move is a ready-made layer from the catalogue: a coat, a hoodie or a jersey costs less than the fabric and saves the evening.

Frequently asked questions
Which DIY costume takes the least time?
The 90s grunge look: five minutes, no purchases, and it photographs better than most costumes that took an hour. The black cat is next, at about fifteen minutes.
What DIY costume looks most expensive?
The ghost bride and the vampire. Both are built from one good garment plus a single detail — a veil, a pair of fangs — and neither needs face paint.
What should I never DIY?
Shoes, wigs and anything that touches the eyes. Buy those. Everything else can be improvised.
