12 days out ยท recovery plan
Last-minute Halloween: a plan from 20 October
One task a day, in the order that actually matters. Each day also lists what to skip โ because the thing that sinks a late costume is not the idea, it is the extra errand.
-
Oct 20Day 1
Lock the concept
Pick one look and stop browsing. Every day after this you are building, not choosing.
Skip: Do not start a DIY project that needs drying time.
-
Oct 21Day 2
Order the one thing you do not own
Place the order today if the parcel has to cross a border. Choose a fast line; the difference is usually less than the price of a pizza.
Skip: Do not order two items from different sellers and hope they merge.
-
Oct 22Day 3
Audit the wardrobe
Lay out what you own that fits the concept: base layer, shoes, one accessory. Write the gap list โ it is always shorter than you think.
Skip: Do not buy shoes online this late; fit is the one thing a photo cannot tell you.
-
Oct 23Day 4
Buy the cheap physical bits
Makeup, tights, face paint, hair pins. These are the items that make or break a look and they are never the expensive part.
Skip: Skip anything that needs a costume shop queue.
-
Oct 24Day 5
Test the makeup
Do a full face at 8 pm under the light you will actually be photographed in. Take a photo. Adjust once.
Skip: Do not test on the night โ white paint behaves differently after two hours.
-
Oct 25Day 6
Prep the fabric
Wash and iron anything new. Cut hems, pin darts, remove tags. Small jobs done now are invisible later.
Skip: Do not iron anything with a printed graphic directly.
-
Oct 26Day 7
Confirm the plan
Who are you meeting, where, at what time, and how are you getting home? Costume decisions are easier once the logistics are fixed.
Skip: Do not agree to outdoor plans without checking the forecast.
-
Oct 27Day 8
The dress rehearsal
Full outfit, full makeup, walk up and down stairs, sit down, get in and out of a car. Fix whatever fails now.
Skip: Do not skip the stairs test in a long hem.
-
Oct 28Day 9
Contingency day
Something will have gone wrong by now. This is the day to fix it, not the 31st.
Skip: Do not start a second look because the first feels boring. It always does at this stage.
-
Oct 29Day 10
Pack the kit
A small bag: pins, makeup for touch-ups, plasters, a phone charger. Leave it by the door.
Skip: Do not carry the whole makeup bag.
-
Oct 30Day 11
Nothing
Seriously. Eat properly, sleep, charge everything. The best costume on the night is the one worn by someone who is not exhausted.
Skip: Do not carve a pumpkin at 11 pm.
-
Oct 31Day 12
Go
Dress 30 minutes earlier than you think you need. Photographs happen before you leave, not after.
Skip: Do not try a new makeup technique tonight.

Frequently asked questions
Is it too late to order a costume on 24 October?
No, if you choose a fast shipping line and a light item. A jersey or a hoodie can reach the US or EU in 5โ9 working days; a coat is heavier and slower.
What is the fastest costume to pull together?
An all-black base plus one strong outer layer. It needs no makeup, no sewing and no shopping if you already own a black top and trousers.
What should I skip when I am late?
Anything that needs drying, fitting or a second order. Late costumes fail on logistics, not on ideas.
