Sheet ghost costume, done properly
The cheapest costume on this site, and the one most likely to look bad. Six steps, one sheet, no sewing — and the three fixes that stop it reading as laundry.
Pick the fabric first
Cotton percale or a washed linen sheet. Polyester satin is the reason most sheet ghosts look like a school play: it reflects light, creases into sharp lines and does not move. An old, softened sheet beats a new one.
Cut one wide band, not two holes
Fold the sheet in half, mark a 1.5 cm band across both eye positions at your own eye height, and cut it as a single slot. Two round holes read as a mask; one dark band reads as shadow.
Pin the shoulders
Put it on, pinch 4–5 cm of fabric at each shoulder blade and pin it flat. Without this the sheet slides forward all night and you spend the evening holding it up.
Fix the hem at the knee
Knee length plus 10 cm is the safe zone: long enough to look like a sheet, short enough to walk up steps. Cut with a slight curve at the front so you do not trip.
Distress the edges
Tear a 2–3 cm strip along the hem and let it hang. Frayed edges are what separate a costume from a folded bedsheet — five minutes of work, no sewing.
Style the underneath
Black leggings, dark boots, dark hands. White on white erases the silhouette; one dark layer under the sheet is what makes the shape read.
No sheet? Two alternatives that look better
A sheet is cheap, not good. If you have a white top and light trousers, you already have a better ghost: the fabric has structure, the collar gives you a neckline, and you can take the top off at the party.

A double flat sheet is enough for most adults. If you are buying fabric, 2.5 m of 150 cm cotton gives you a full-length sheet with room to re-cut the hem.
Can I see through a sheet costume?
Yes, if you cut a single horizontal band rather than two holes, and if the fabric is thin cotton. Test it in a dim room before you leave: stairs and kerbs are the real hazard, not the dark.
Is a sheet ghost costume safe for kids?
Only with a cut-out face opening, a hem above the shoes, and an adult within arm's reach. Never let a child wear a full sheet over the face near candles, pumpkins or traffic.
